Millennial marketing-Its time you take notice of this group

June 15th, 2016

Born between 1982 and 1994; a millennialreaches young adulthood around year 2000. To think of this segment of individuals, it is a vast section. There are millions of millennials today who are working, earning and creating income. There is a high probability that you- the reader of this piece is a millennial than any other demographic. Millennials are often left out when it comes to thinking up marketing strategies. The reasons are unknown. We believe it is because there is a lot lesser understanding of the needs and wants of this particular section of the population.

The millennial has a lot going on for him. They are the ones who have seen the rapid success of technology and its usage in modern times. We have grown up in a period where we used old technology such as dial up internet and the post office and graduated to high speed Wi-Fi and instant messaging. We know and have used the best of both worlds. This gives us a unique advantage over the rest of the generations such as gen X and the baby boomers. We understand technology a lot more than anyone else and hence, it is not easy to sell to us, because we question everything. This is the generation that asks why and how your product is useful to them and does not get captivated by extravagant gimmicks with celebrities.

What you need to know about millennials to ace millennial marketing

  Millennials are creative

Millennials are the result of the gen x tribe; the one that believes getting a good education sets you up for life. This generation prefers to explore their strengths and weaknesses and work towards creating an environment that allows them to satisfy their creative needs. The great economic recession of the 2000’s heralded the beginning of the need to pursue ambitions and not sit and wait for opportunities to come by. Various activities that we see as main stream today were looked down upon and not thought of as a career 2 decades ago. The way to connect with millennials is to understand that being creative is not something that needs to be done to grab eyeballs alone; it defines your brand for them, and allows them to connect. Your message should bond with them on a personal basis, or else it is going to be shoved out of the way-violently.

 Technology helps them live better

My favorite aspect of the millennial generation is that technology does not define our lives. We are masters of the apps and the internet, but we know when and where to draw the line. We can be perfectly comfortable with or without our devices as we have lived that life too. Your product should be able to help them achieve this balance better, by making it easier and they will acknowledge and use it. We unplug as well as we plug in, so to reach us, a multi-channel approach is essential.

Confidence is not an effort, it is in-born

The millennials are the game changers. We question the status quo and create solutions. This has given us uber amounts of confidence. We accept what we like and embrace it with passion. We also reject what we do not like-with a passion. We have been instrumental in making the things we use daily and this has given us a confidence that is not easy to break. Gaining the confidence of a millennial is not an easy task and it requires you to look deeper into your products and services and find that x factor, the one thing that will build confidence in them.

We are not going anywhere- it’s going to get a lot better!

This generation currently calls the shots, no doubt about it. All the big corporations around the world are currently being run by millennials. We are the ones driving the economy, taking major decisions and the political scenes across the world are seeing a rise in young leaders. These are the sign of times to come. We are going to grow older, wiser, and richer and we will have families of our own. Create products and solutions that give you a strong foot hold into this ever growing and prosperous demographic.

Marketing to millennials is not easy. It requires you to first understand them, and that in itself is a task. Creating branding and marketing campaigns around them is essential to gain their confidence and allow you to be part of their inner circle.
